Medicaid and a Health Home Approach for Children on the Autism Spectrum
Health homes, in partnership with Medicaid managed care organizations (MCOs), enhance the experience of children on the autism spectrum and their families by improving coordination, implementing a child- and family-centered approach, and offering critical assistance as they navigate multiple agencies and delivery systems.
Over 2 million individuals in the United States are affected by autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including one in 68 children. Autism is a spectrum of developmental disorders, often diagnosed in early childhood, which manifest as a range of symptoms and levels of disability. For many children this includes significant social, communication, adaptive, and behavioral challenges requiring a variety of services and supports.
MCOs are using innovative approaches to assist children and their families. One approach is a health home designed specifically to support children on the autism spectrum. The health home seamlessly connects children and families to an array of services and supports tailored to their preferences, needs, and goals.
