Our Research Topics
In support of Elevance Health’s efforts to improve health for all, the Public Policy Institute (PPI) conducts health policy research and data analysis on topics that align with areas of interest to federal and state policymakers, employers, consumers, and other stakeholders. These topics include health insurance coverage and financing through commercial health plans, Medicaid, and Medicare, as well as other drivers of health policy such as healthcare spending and value and healthcare transformation. Below, learn more about each area of focus.
Health Insurance Coverage and Financing
Commercial Insurance
Commercial health insurance is obtained through an employer or the individual health insurance marketplace. It offers financial protection to enrollees by covering a portion of medical expenses, including hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription medications.
Medicaid
Medicaid provides health insurance coverage to people who have limited incomes and is designed and administered by states within federal rules. A majority of states rely on Medicaid managed care organizations, like Elevance Health-affiliated plans, to provide Medicaid benefits.
Medicare
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for people aged 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease. The program consists of different parts, including hospital insurance (Part A), medical insurance (Part B), and prescription drug coverage (Part D). Alternatively, beneficiaries can choose coordinated coverage of all benefits through private Medicare Advantage plans (Part C).
Healthcare Industry Trends
Healthcare Spending and Value
High-value healthcare prioritizes both quality of care and affordability. Health plans and care providers can work together to create an efficient and effective healthcare system that delivers optimal health outcomes and improves patient experience.
Transforming Healthcare
As the healthcare system evolves, a broader view of health is emerging, one that prioritizes behavioral and social factors along with physical health. Embracing innovation, optimizing processes, and leveraging technology can make healthcare more accessible, efficient, and capable of meeting the changing needs of individuals and communities.
