Medicaid Plan Improves Housing Stability for Families in Nevada
Medicaid programs and managed care plans are increasingly implementing innovative housing interventions and partnerships to help people experiencing housing instability. Results from an affiliated health plan in Nevada reveal that six months after receiving a housing intervention, over 90 percent of members maintained stable housing.
Homelessness among families in the U.S. has steadily increased and disproportionately impacts certain populations. Housing instability can lead to or exacerbate mental health disorders and chronic conditions, as well as disrupt access to healthcare. Medicaid managed care plans are in a position to invest in housing support services and partnerships to improve housing stability.
This study demonstrates how Elevance Health’s affiliated-Medicaid plan in Nevada improved housing stability for families. Nearly 60 percent of members participating in the housing interventions were Black, and about the same proportion of members remaining in housing six months later were also Black. These results indicate that tailored housing support services and robust partnerships through managed care are effective in equitably improving housing stability.
